Google Ads Target CPA Updates

Effective August 17th, Google Ads will update its target bidding strategies, impacting all client accounts. As Target CPA (tCPA) is our primary bidding strategy, this change necessitates a shift in how we manage and optimize campaign performance.

Current Bidding Methodology:

Currently, you utilize Target CPA to provide the algorithm with a specific cost-per-lead goal. For instance, with a $100 target, Google attempts to meet or exceed that efficiency. If a campaign consistently delivers an $80 CPA over a 2-6 week period, we manually lower the target to further improve performance. However, reducing targets too aggressively risks limiting spend and ad visibility.

Impact of the Change on Optimization

Under the new update, if a campaign is budget-constrained—as most of our accounts are—the reported Cost Per Lead will align strictly with the $100 target rather than showcasing over-performance. This creates a “blind” optimization environment where we must guess when to decrease targets without clear performance context, increasing the risk of inadvertently suppressing ad delivery.

Comparative Scenarios

Scenario A: High Over-performance
Target CPA: $100 | Actual internal performance: $50
New Visible CPA: $100
Result: Instead of adjusting once, we must incrementally test lower targets (e.g., $80, then $75). This could extend the optimization timeline from 1 day to 8 weeks.

Scenario B: Marginal Performance
Target CPA: $100 | Actual internal performance: $98
New Visible CPA: $100

Result: Reducing the target to $80 may cause ads to stop showing entirely, forcing us to reactively adjust upwards and hope for stabilization without lead spikes.
